Message from Senior Vice President
Throughout 2021 we made considerable progress in embedding sustainability across our operations, delivering carbon emissions reduction, optimising the reuse of materials and supporting our workforce’s wellbeing.
To underscore this, working together with our external sustainability panel we introduced Act – an evolution of our long-term sustainability strategy. Focusing on three key themes that are central to business operations and customers – people, planet and solutions – it sets out ambitious goals for the company to achieve by 2030 and confirms our commitment to becoming fully net zero before 2050.
It’s equally important that our sustainability work is supported across our wider supply chains and it was rewarding to see over 800 representatives attend our first Supplier Sustainability Week. This provided an opportunity for our partners to understand our sustainability strategy, how they can support us and how they can enhance the sustainability of their own businesses. This has helped us to identify and explore innovation that we can embrace ourselves and share across the wider industry as we continue to deliver the solutions that are helping our customers create a sustainable built environment.
Playing an active role in the communities we work in continues to be a fundamental part of the way we operate in a considerate and responsible way, with our teams committing thousands of hours to volunteering activities every year. An important milestone has been the renewal of our successful partnership with the Peak District National Park Authority for a further five years, where we’re supporting the restoration and development of one of the UK’s most treasured and precious landscapes.
Across our business there is no question that our people remain our strongest and most valuable asset. As part of making Tarmac a great place to work and thrive it’s crucial we allow people to develop in a fair, supportive and inclusive culture. This was recognised in achieving Clear Assured silver accreditation status for inclusion and diversity – demonstrating the strong progress we’re making in this area.
Our commitment to investing in people has been highlighted by the opening of a new occupational health and wellbeing facility at our National Skills and Safety Park. Providing practical, hands-on training, the facility has become a key part of our drive towards improving health and safety standards and we’re delighted it won the Mineral Products Association’s Safer Through Improvements in Health & Wellbeing award.
We should rightly take great pride in the progress we achieved throughout 2021, which is a credit to all our teams and partners who have worked hard to contribute successes. It’s a sign of our ambition that we’re already looking ahead to identify how we can deliver ongoing sustainability leadership, with improved environmental, social and economic outcomes both now and into the future.
